Nigeria’s Super Eagles have surged to 26th place in the latest FIFA World Ranking, released on Monday, marking a 12-place jump from their previous position.
The ranking, published on FIFA’s official website, also reflects a points gain of 79.09, underlining Nigeria’s strong recent performances.
The Super Eagles’ rise from 38th follows an impressive outing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, where they finished third after defeating Egypt in the playoff on Saturday.
Coached by Eric Chelle, the team delivered a campaign widely praised for its cohesion, discipline, and teamwork. Nigeria lost just one of seven matches, suffering a semi-final defeat to tournament hosts Morocco via a penalty shootout, before securing the bronze medal.
At the top of the latest FIFA rankings are the usual heavyweights: Spain, Argentina, France, England, Brazil, Portugal, the Netherlands, Morocco, Belgium, and Germany.
In Africa, the leading nations are Morocco, Senegal, Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Tunisia, DR Congo, and Mali, with Nigeria now firmly placed among the continent’s elite.
Nigeria’s improved global standing reflects more than just a successful AFCON campaign. It highlights the emergence of a team that blends homegrown talent with international experience, strengthening its reputation as a rising force in African football.
The Federal Government has commended the Super Eagles for their spirited performance, describing it as a reflection of discipline, unity, and resilience—values synonymous with the Nigerian spirit.
“Football has its highs and lows, but your effort, commitment, and fighting spirit throughout this tournament have earned the respect and gratitude of Nigerians at home and abroad,” the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said in a statement.
“You reminded us that wearing the green and white is about courage, unity, and never giving up. Hold your heads high, learn from this experience, stay united, and return stronger.”
