Fire razes petrol station, tanker, others in Oyo community

A devastating fire on Tuesday completely destroyed the RSK Adebowale Multipurpose Filling Station, a petrol tanker, and a motorcycle in the Ofiki area of Saki, Oyo State.

The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Moroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday in Ibadan.

According to Akinwande, the agency received a distress call from Alhaji Mufutau Badmus, the Saki Branch Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), alerting them to the blaze.

“On receipt of the call, our firemen, led by Mr. Kolade Taiwo, immediately mobilised to the scene,” he said. “On arrival, we found the filling station, a DAF tanker truck loaded with 50,000 litres of petrol, a Bajaj motorcycle, and three fuel dispensing pumps already engulfed in flames.”

He added that personnel were able to fully extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby properties.

Akinwande also commended the Ofiki Division of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for providing security and support during the operation. He urged all filling station owners in the state to prioritise fire safety measures.

The incident follows a similar fire on January 9 in the Kara area of Kishi, Irepo Local Government Area, which destroyed property worth millions of naira, including three vehicles and a community power house. An eyewitness said the blaze started around 5 p.m. after an explosion at the power house ignited nearby combustible materials, causing the fire to spread to surrounding property.
