Celtic sack manager Nancy after eight games

Wilfried Nancy
Celtic on Monday sacked manager Wilfried Nancy after just eight games in charge of the Scottish champions, a disastrous spell that saw his side suffer six defeats.

The decision followed Saturday’s damaging 3–1 home loss to arch-rivals Rangers, which triggered angry protests by supporters outside Celtic Park and proved the final straw for the club’s hierarchy.

“Celtic Football Club today announces that it has decided to terminate the contract of manager Wilfried Nancy with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement.

Celtic confirmed that Nancy’s entire coaching staff have also departed, along with Paul Tisdale, the club’s head of football operations.

The 48-year-old Frenchman, who joined from Major League Soccer side Columbus Crew in early December, leaves the Hoops six points adrift of Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts, though still in second place.

Nancy had signed a two-and-a-half-year contract but lasted little more than a month at Parkhead, overseeing a dramatic collapse in form.

Celtic had won seven of their eight matches under interim boss Martin O’Neill, but results deteriorated rapidly after Nancy’s arrival. His tenure included a troubled league run and a 3–1 defeat to St Mirren in the Scottish League Cup final.

O’Neill, a former full-time Celtic manager, had taken temporary charge following Brendan Rodgers’ resignation in October.
