Nigeria’s strong performance in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group stage has been highlighted by individual and technical accolades, with Ademola Lookman named in the Team of the Group Stage and Eric Chelle recognized as Coach of the Group Stage.

Lookman played a decisive role in Nigeria’s group matches, contributing energy, creativity, and key moments that shaped the team’s performances. In just two appearances, he registered two goals and two assists, earning praise for his direct running and attacking intelligence.

According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Friday, the Atalanta forward “was a constant threat with his direct running, creativity, and eye for goal. His versatility allowed him to play both as an attacking midfielder and a winger, and his off-the-ball movement was a nightmare for defenders. Lookman’s ability to find pockets of space and deliver key passes in critical moments made him one of the group stage’s most dangerous players.”

Meanwhile, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle earned recognition for guiding the team with tactical brilliance and cohesion. CAF noted, “Under Chelle, the Nigerian national team displayed a solid defensive setup, quick transitions, and freedom for attacking players to express themselves. His clear vision and consistent choices allowed Nigeria to perform at their best during the group stage, showcasing a balanced style of play. Chelle’s ability to maximise his squad’s potential and build a collective identity was one of the highlights of the group stage.”

Defensively, Mohamed El Shenawy anchored a disciplined backline alongside Noussair Mazraoui, Axel Tuanzebe, Edmond Tapsoba, and Yahia Attiat-Allah, combining composure with reliability under pressure. In midfield, Brahim Díaz orchestrated play creatively, while Carlos Baleba dominated transitions and provided energy.

At the front, the attacking trio of Riyad Mahrez, Amad Diallo, and Sadio Mané delivered moments of magic, goals, and leadership, demonstrating why they are among Africa’s elite. Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen narrowly missed out on a place in the team despite his notable contributions.

Nigeria’s standout performances in both individual and team categories underline the country’s growing influence and competitiveness in African football.
