Internationally acclaimed heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital and declared clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.

The update was contained in a joint statement issued on Wednesday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, and the Ogun State Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade.

According to the statement, Joshua was discharged earlier on Wednesday and is “heavy-hearted and full of emotions” following the death of two of his close friends in a recent road accident.

“The governments of Lagos and Ogun states once again commiserate with the families of the two young men, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, who tragically lost their lives in the road accident involving Anthony Joshua on 29 December 2025,” the statement said.

“We pray that the Almighty grants the repose of their souls and gives their families and loved ones the strength to bear this painful loss.”

It added that Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos on Wednesday afternoon to pay their last respects to the deceased, ahead of their repatriation later in the evening.

The statement also noted that Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu appreciated the outpouring of public concern and sympathy following the incident.

The two state governments further expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support, as well as to the doctors and medical personnel of Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, who attended to Joshua and others injured in the crash.

Joshua was involved in a car accident on Monday in the Makun area of Ogun State, which claimed the lives of his two friends.

The crash occurred around 11:00 a.m. along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when an SUV conveying the boxer collided with a stationary truck.

Videos from the scene showed the 35-year-old former heavyweight champion being rescued from the wreckage, appearing to have sustained injuries.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, later attributed the accident to overspeeding and wrongful overtaking.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, the Ogun State Public Relations Officer of the FRSC, Afolabi Oyewole, said the driver was travelling at high speed before attempting an illegal overtaking manoeuvre.

“What happened was that the driver involved in the accident was on a very high speed. He wrongfully overtook and crashed into a stationary vehicle parked on the extreme shoulder of the road,” Oyewole said.

He explained that the severity of the impact made it impossible for all occupants to escape without injury, noting that it was only fortunate that the collision occurred on the right-hand side of the vehicle.

Oyewole confirmed that Anthony Joshua and the driver survived the crash and were immediately evacuated by Department of State Services (DSS) operatives attached to the boxer and taken to an undisclosed hospital.
