US lottery player wins $1.8bn Powerball jackpot

A lottery player in the US state of Arkansas has won the $1.8 billion Powerball jackpot, the second-largest lottery prize ever recorded in the United States, the game’s organisers announced on Thursday.

Powerball said in a statement that final ticket sales pushed the jackpot to $1.817 billion, making it the biggest Powerball prize of the year.

The winning numbers were drawn on Christmas Eve.

The winner will have the option of receiving the full jackpot in 30 annual instalments or taking a one-time lump-sum cash payout of $834.9 million before taxes.

According to Powerball, the odds of winning the jackpot are approximately one in 292.2 million.

The largest lottery jackpot in US history remains the $2.04 billion prize won in 2022 by a ticket holder in California.
