Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on Sunday paid a condolence visit to Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, following the death of the state’s Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
Ewhrudjakpo reportedly died suddenly on December 11.
Governor Fubara arrived in Yenagoa under tight security, dressed in black native attire with a matching cap, according to a report by Channels Television. He exchanged greetings with Governor Diri before proceeding to the Bayelsa State Government House.
Earlier, the Rivers governor had described Ewhrudjakpo’s death as a monumental loss, commiserating with Governor Diri, the Bayelsa State Government, and the people of the state.
In a statement personally signed by him, Fubara said: “On behalf of the Government and people of Rivers State, I extend our deepest condolences to you, my brother, Governor Douye Diri, and to the people of Bayelsa State over the sudden passing of your Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.”
He noted that the tragic loss had resonated beyond Bayelsa’s borders, leaving many in a state of collective mourning.
“The sad news resonates across our borders, leaving us in collective mourning alongside our brothers and sisters in Bayelsa State,” he said.
Fubara described the late deputy governor as a man of exceptional calibre whose public service was marked by integrity, humility, and intellectual depth.
“Throughout his distinguished career, he navigated the complexities of governance with a rare blend of intellectual depth and profound humility,” the statement read.
“Senator Ewhrudjakpo was not merely a political figure; he was a steadfast pillar of the administration and a beacon of hope to his constituents.”
