Besiktas midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has been named the new captain of the Super Eagles, assuming leadership of one of Africa’s most decorated national teams ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The appointment was confirmed in a statement shared on the Super Eagles’ official social media handle on Friday.
“Wilfred Ndidi has been named captain of the Super Eagles and says the responsibility means everything as Nigeria heads to Morocco,” the post read.
Ndidi’s first major assignment will be to lead the three-time African champions in their quest for continental glory at the AFCON, where Nigeria will be seeking a fourth title.
Speaking to the Super Eagles media team, the former Leicester City midfielder described the captaincy as a privilege and emphasised the importance of unity within the squad.
“It’s a huge responsibility, and with the help of the players, I think everything will go smoothly,” Ndidi said.
“I’ve spoken with some of the senior players to help everyone understand why we’re here. We also need the support of the technical crew. We’re all in this together.”
Ndidi’s elevation follows the retirement of former captains Ahmed Musa and William Troost-Ekong. While Musa has not featured regularly for the national team in recent months and was an unused substitute at the 2023 AFCON, Troost-Ekong’s decision to step away from international football came as a surprise.
The defender had been included in the Super Eagles’ provisional squad for the 2025 AFCON but announced his retirement before the final list was released.
Nigeria have been drawn in Group C of the tournament alongside Tanzania, Uganda and Tunisia. The Super Eagles will open their campaign on December 23.
