FCCPC seals Ikeja Electric over consumer rights violations

Officials of the FCCPC seal up a Chinese supermarket in Abuja on April 22, 2024.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed Ikeja Electric’s facilities for violating consumer rights.

Bola Adeyinka, FCCPC’s Director of Surveillance and Investigation, said the action aligns with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.

“Sealing this facility is a proportionate enforcement measure taken only after repeated engagement and several opportunities for voluntary compliance,” Adeyinka said in a statement on Thursday. “The seal will remain in place until Ikeja Electric fully complies with the directives issued by both NERC and the FCCPC and provides written evidence of that compliance.”

The FCCPC explained that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had issued a binding decision directing Ikeja Electric to unbundle a Maximum Demand account into twenty non-Maximum Demand accounts, recognising nineteen residential units and a service point as separate customer units, and to provide the required metering and connection.

“Ikeja Electric did not carry out that decision,” the statement said. “As a result, the complainant has been without electricity for more than two and a half years, despite paying all charges and meeting every obligation. The lack of electricity has prevented the complainant from using the nineteen residential units.”

The FCCPC said it repeatedly engaged Ikeja Electric, including notifying the company of the outstanding NERC decision. In April 2025, the Commission issued a directive detailing the steps and timelines for compliance.

However, the company failed to act, prompting the FCCPC to issue a Compliance Notice on 2 October 2025, requiring full compliance within seven business days. The commission said Ikeja Electric still did not comply.

As of publication, Ikeja Electric has not commented on the matter.
