The Federal Government has addressed concerns about subject selection under the newly updated Senior Secondary School Curriculum as students continue registering for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
In a statement on Saturday, Education Minister Maruf Tunji Alausa and Minister of State for Education Sa’id Suwaiba Ahmad reassured the public that students face no limitations in choosing from the approved list of subjects.
“All subjects remain fully open for students to select, provided their choices are properly guided by school authorities, parents, or certified school counselors,” the ministers said.
They further clarified that students specializing in science are free to choose subjects from the social sciences or arts categories, and vice versa. The revised curriculum is designed to be flexible, student-focused, and adaptable to diverse academic interests and career aspirations.
On Information and Communication Technology, the ministers confirmed the subject has been renamed Digital Technology, emphasizing that this change is purely terminological and does not affect the curriculum’s content. Students who previously studied ICT remain eligible to register for and sit the Digital Technology exam.
Regarding vocational subjects, the Ministry confirmed that six trade-related courses have been officially approved in the updated curriculum.
“A student may register for any of these subjects if the school offers them and the student has been taught the course. Where a student has not been exposed to or offered any of the six trade subjects, there is no obligation to register for a trade subject as a third option,” the statement said.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to the education sector, the Ministry urged parents, school authorities, counselors, and examination bodies to rely on accurate information and provide proper guidance to students during this transition.
The Ministry assured that the Federal Government remains dedicated to ensuring a smooth, well-coordinated, and transparent WAEC registration process nationwide.
