CAC to clamp down on unregistered PoS operators from January

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has warned that unregistered Point of Sale (POS) operators in Nigeria will face a nationwide crackdown starting 1st January 2026.

The commission noted a growing number of POS operators running without proper registration, in violation of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020 and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Agent Banking Regulations.

In a statement released on Saturday, CAC stressed that all POS operators must be fully registered with the commission or risk immediate shutdown. Security agencies will be deployed to enforce compliance across the country.

The agency also highlighted that this widespread non-compliance, sometimes facilitated by fintech companies, poses a threat to the integrity of Nigeria’s financial system and citizens’ investments.

“Unregistered POS terminals will be seized or shut down by security officials. Fintechs enabling illegal operations will be placed on a watchlist and reported to the CBN. All operators are advised to regularize immediately. Compliance is mandatory,” the statement read.
