The White House on Monday confirmed that US President Donald Trump will attend the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals in Washington later this week. The United States will co-host the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico.
“On Friday, President Trump will attend the FIFA World Cup final draw at the Kennedy Center,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters.
Trump has positioned the World Cup as a centerpiece event of both his second presidency and the 250th anniversary of US independence next year.
However, the sporting extravaganza has not been immune to political tensions stemming from Trump’s hardline positions on various issues.
The Republican president has even suggested the possibility of relocating matches from some US host cities, citing concerns about crime and illegal migration in certain Democratic-run areas.
