Active electricity customers in Nigeria rise to 11.96 million – NERC

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reported that the total number of active electricity customers nationwide rose from 11.89 million in July to 11.96 million in August 2025.

The update was disclosed in NERC’s latest Metering Factsheet for July and August 2025, shared on the commission’s official X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram handles on Monday. The figures cover all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in the country.

According to NERC, 6.58 million customers were metered, representing a metering rate of 55.01%, up slightly from 54.71% in July. A total of 70,888 customers were newly metered in August, compared to 76,783 in July, reflecting ongoing efforts to expand metering across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

The commission attributed the improvement to ongoing reforms and investments by DisCos, aimed at enhancing billing transparency and consumer trust. Eko, Ikeja, and Abuja DisCos were the top performers in metering coverage nationwide, with Eko Electricity Distribution Company at 84.25%, Ikeja Electric at 84.83%, and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company at 73.92%.

Earlier in April, NERC sanctioned eight distribution companies—Abuja, Ikeja, Eko, Enugu, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola—for violating approved monthly energy caps on estimated billing of unmetered customers. The fines totaled over ₦628 million, and the affected customers were instructed to receive appropriate account credits.

In a related development, NERC revealed that 225,631 meters were installed nationwide in Q2 2025, a 20.55% increase from 187,161 units in Q1. Of these, 147,823 meters (65.52%) were installed under the Meter Asset Provider initiative, 65,315 through the Meter Acquisition Fund, 12,259 via vendor financing, and 234 under the DisCo-financed scheme.
