Ukrainian attacks on energy infrastructure have left more than 20,000 residents without electricity in several Russian regions near the border, local authorities said on Sunday.

Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reported that the regional capital’s “electricity and heating supply network has suffered severe damage.” He added on Telegram: “Several streets are affected by power issues… More than 20,000 residents are without electricity.”

In the western Kursk region, a fire at a power plant in the village of Korenevo cut electricity to 10 localities, Governor Alexander Khinshtein said on Telegram. Meanwhile, in the southern Voronezh region, Governor Alexander Gusev reported a fire at a heating facility.

Russia’s defence ministry said it had shot down 44 drones over the border Bryansk region.

The strikes come amid escalating attacks by Moscow on Ukrainian infrastructure. On Saturday, Russian attacks on energy facilities forced Ukraine to scramble to restore electricity and heating, with generating capacity at one provider reduced to “zero,” causing at least four fatalities.

Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia launched 69 drones at energy facilities across the country overnight into Sunday, of which 34 were intercepted, according to the Ukrainian air force.
