Senator Sunday Marshall Katung has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), promising to deliver stronger representation and accelerate development in the Kaduna South Senatorial District.
Announcing his defection in a statement titled “A New Chapter: A Message of Unity and Purpose,” Katung said the decision followed weeks of wide consultations with constituents, political stakeholders, family members, and associates across the district.
Describing the move as “difficult but necessary,” the lawmaker said it was driven by his commitment to serve more effectively and ensure that the voices of his people are heard “at the highest decision-making levels of government.”
Katung explained that his decision was also influenced by calls from constituents urging him to align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani, both of whom he praised for demonstrating a strong interest in the development of Southern Kaduna.
“President Tinubu and Governor Sani have shown leadership that prioritises inclusion, unity, and equitable development. It is only right to join hands with them to advance our people’s interests,” he said.
The senator commended both leaders for their inclusive governance style and developmental projects across the senatorial zone, adding that he and other political associates — including Hon. Daniel Amos — share a common vision of progress and partnership.
While acknowledging that his defection might not please everyone, Katung appealed for understanding and urged supporters not to allow political differences to destroy personal friendships or shared goals.
Quoting former US President Thomas Jefferson, he said, “A difference of opinion in politics should never be a reason to withdraw from a friend.”
Katung reaffirmed his commitment to open communication with constituents and pledged to work closely with the APC-led government to deliver purposeful governance, unity, and tangible development to Kaduna South.
