Another building collapses in Lagos, one killed, eight rescued

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed the death of one person following the collapse of a three-storey building in the Apapa area of Lagos State on Thursday.

According to a statement by LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, eight other people were rescued from the rubble and taken to the Ajeromi General Hospital after receiving first aid from the Lagos State Ambulance Service.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the agency’s response team arrived at the scene at about 11:09 a.m. after receiving distress calls and found the structure at No. 28, Baale Alayabiagba Street, Ajegunle, Apapa, completely collapsed, trapping several workers.

“The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined,” he said. “One adult male was recovered dead, while eight others were rescued alive.”

Residents told reporters that the building was undergoing manual demolition when it suddenly gave way, burying workers on site.

Emergency responders at the scene included personnel from LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Building Control Agency, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Nigeria Police.

Search and rescue operations were still ongoing as of press time.
