The entire Enugu State caucus in the House of Representatives has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection was formally announced on Thursday by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who read the lawmakers’ resignation letters from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) during plenary.

The event was witnessed by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah.

In their letters, the lawmakers cited unresolved internal crises within their former parties as the reason for their defection, describing the situation as a threat to the stability of the opposition.

Following the 2023 general election, the Labour Party won seven of Enugu’s eight House seats, while the PDP secured one. With Thursday’s defection, the APC now controls all eight seats in the state’s House of Representatives caucus.

Speaking after the announcement, Nnolim Nnaji, member representing Nkanu East/Nkanu West Federal Constituency and spokesman for the defectors, said their decision was driven by a desire to align with Governor Mbah’s development agenda and the federal government’s policies.

“Enugu can no longer remain in opposition,” Nnaji said. “By aligning with the APC — the party driving national transformation — we are connecting our state to the heartbeat of national development. This move will bring more projects, jobs, and empowerment to our people.”

The defectors include Martins Oke, Anayo Onwuegbu, Nnamdi Agbo, Nnolim Nnaji, and Mark Obetta.

In a related development, Daniel Asama, representing Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, also announced his defection from the Labour Party to the APC.
