Northern stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have endorsed former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as the consensus candidate for the party’s national chairmanship ahead of its elective convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16.

The decision was announced by Governor Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State after a closed-door meeting of northern PDP leaders held in Abuja on Wednesday. He, however, clarified that the consensus arrangement does not preclude any other aspirant from contesting at the convention.

According to Fintiri, the meeting was convened to foster unity and ensure that the North presents a single candidate for the chairmanship position.

Those present at the meeting included Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), and Umaru Fintiri (Adamawa); former Senate President Bukola Saraki; Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro; PDP National Chairman Umar Damagum; and other prominent party leaders from the North.

The meeting was hosted at the Abuja residence of former Kaduna State governor, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, who was also a contender for the national chairmanship position alongside other northern party stalwarts, including former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido.

The forthcoming convention will elect new members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) to steer the affairs of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections and beyond.
