Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has said that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, remains the only credible opposition voice in Nigeria. However, he maintained that President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are unlikely to be defeated in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television Wednesday, Fayose said: “Tell me, who will defeat the APC? The only opposition that still has traction is Obi. I’m not saying he can win against Asiwaju, but he’s the only one people are still listening to. The rest, including Atiku, are just filling gaps.”
‘ADC going nowhere’
Fayose also dismissed the new opposition coalition led by Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi, which recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform for 2027.
“ADC? They are going nowhere. They’re old friends, senior and junior colleagues. It’s not a threat,” he said.
The former governor reiterated his support for President Tinubu but insisted he has not joined or sought any favours from the APC.
“Asiwaju asked me, ‘Oshoko, what would we give you?’ I said, ‘Nothing, sir.’ I’m 65. I’ve served well. I’m not hobnobbing with the APC, but I’ve been Asiwaju’s friend and brother for a long time,” he said.
PDP is dead, Tinubu not to blame
Fayose described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a “dead” party, adding that he won’t be part of any effort to revive it. He also absolved President Tinubu of blame in the recent defections of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri to the APC.
“It’s unfair to blame Tinubu for PDP’s crisis. The party is already gone. Even the few remaining governors are weighing their options.”
