NELFUND urges institutional collaboration to update student records

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has called on all accredited tertiary institutions to update and upload student records, both returning and newly admitted on its Student Verification Portal ahead of the 2025/2026 academic session.

In a statement issued Thursday, NELFUND spokesperson Oseyemi Oluwatuyi described the exercise as a proactive step to ensure a smooth verification and loan application process when the portal officially opens.

Institutions are required to accurately capture each student’s data using admission numbers or other verifiable identifiers. Only students whose details have been uploaded and verified through their institutions will be eligible to apply for loans.

“NELFUND recognises the vital role of tertiary institutions in the success of the Education Loan Scheme and seeks their continued cooperation to expand access to higher education,” the statement read.

Institutions have been urged to designate responsible officers to oversee the upload process and follow the technical guidelines provided by NELFUND.

The student data is being collected through the Student Loan Access System (SLAS) portal. Tertiary institutions must request access to SLAS to verify and upload student data, a crucial step for timely loan approval and disbursement.

Once verification is complete, eligible students’ status will automatically update to “Disbursed,” indicating that loan payments have been made.

NELFUND reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, efficiency, and accountability in managing the student loan scheme, ensuring that no qualified student is left behind.
