Former Senate President, Senator Adolphus Wabara, has declared support for the campaign demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a solidarity letter dated October 13 and addressed to activist and 2023 AAC presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, Wabara commended the planned protest scheduled for October 20. He praised Sowore and others for their courage in standing against injustice and advocating for national reconciliation.
“Though I’m currently out of the country on a medical trip and unable to join physically, I’m with you in spirit and fully support every peaceful effort to secure justice,” Wabara wrote in the letter, shared by Sowore via X on Wednesday.
Sowore had earlier called on South-East leaders—including governors, lawmakers, traditional and religious figures—to support the protest. He said he had reached out to several key figures including Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
While some leaders acknowledged his outreach, Sowore expressed disappointment that others had not responded. He emphasized the urgency of unified action, stating:
“If we truly believe Nnamdi Kanu deserves freedom, then every leader of conscience must act now—not later.”
Kanu has been in Department of State Services (DSS) custody since his controversial 2021 extradition from Kenya. Despite multiple court rulings—including an October 2022 Court of Appeal decision ordering his release—the Federal Government has yet to comply.
He currently faces charges of terrorism, treasonable felony, and incitement at the Federal High Court in Abuja, all of which he denies.
