The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed disappointment over recent political defections, while criticizing the current administration.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, Obi emphasized that Nigeria is not under military rule.
“We are not in a military era where people are captured by force,” he said, responding to the defections of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Describing Governor Mbah as a good friend, Obi acknowledged that the governor’s decision was likely based on his own political considerations.
On claims that the South-East region could be “captured” politically, Obi dismissed the notion. He stressed that leadership in a democracy relies on persuasion, not coercion.
“As for the alleged plot to capture the South-East, we are not in military times when you capture people. A true leader inspires people to follow through good governance, not force. So, I don’t believe anyone is ‘capturing’ anywhere,” Obi stated.
He urged public officials to focus on delivering good governance and implementing policies that improve the lives of citizens.
Obi also warned that no political realignment can guarantee the loyalty of the people without tangible performance.
“The government needs to do more if it wants the people’s support,” he added.
