Ahmedabad, India, has been recommended as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, Commonwealth Sport announced on Wednesday. The Indian city was selected over a competing bid from Abuja, Nigeria, to host the event marking the Commonwealth Games’ centenary.
This will be the second time in 20 years that India hosts the Games. The decision came after an evaluation commission from Commonwealth Sport reviewed both bids and favored Ahmedabad. The selection is expected to be formally ratified at the organization’s General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26.
Ahmedabad, located in western India, is home to the Narendra Modi Stadium—the largest stadium in the world with a seating capacity of 132,000—which hosted the 2023 Cricket World Cup final. With a population of over five million, the city has also been considered a potential future Olympic host.
Dr. P T Usha, president of the Commonwealth Games Association India, said, “We see the 2030 Games as a powerful opportunity to inspire our youth, strengthen international partnerships, and contribute to a shared future across the Commonwealth.”
India previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in Delhi. This marks the second time Abuja has missed out on hosting the event, having lost the 2014 bid to Glasgow.
