Bayelsa governor Diri resigns from PDP

Governor of Bayelsa State, Duoye Diri
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending months of speculation about his possible defection.

The announcement was made public on Wednesday via a Facebook post by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah. According to the post, Diri’s resignation was accompanied by that of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, and all PDP lawmakers in the state legislature.

The move marks a significant shift in Bayelsa’s political landscape, although Alabrah did not confirm which political party the governor intends to join. However, there has been growing speculation in recent months about his likely move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sources told The Telegraph that the governor made the announcement during the weekly State Executive Council meeting at Government House in Yenagoa. It is also believed that all members of the State Executive Council tendered their resignations in solidarity.

Governor Diri is reported to have submitted his formal resignation letter to the PDP leadership.

When contacted for confirmation, Alabrah said he was unable to speak on the matter at the time: “I cannot talk now,” he told The Telegraph.

Multiple calls to the PDP state chairman, Mr. Solomon Agwanana, went unanswered.
