Police suspend enforcement of tinted glass permit policy

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has temporarily suspended the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991.

Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, announced the suspension on Thursday following a meeting between the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, and President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe (SAN), at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

“While there is no court order currently restraining enforcement of the Act, the police — in consideration of public interest and the NBA’s concerns — have decided to suspend enforcement pending the hearing of a Motion on Notice scheduled for October 16, 2025, at the Federal High Court, Warri,” Hundeyin said.

The meeting with the NBA centred on the legal and practical concerns surrounding enforcement of the Act and provided an opportunity for open dialogue and collaboration between the police and legal professionals.

To strengthen this relationship, a joint Police-NBA Committee has been inaugurated to promote synergy in upholding the rule of law and boosting public trust.

Meanwhile, the police advised vehicle owners to use this suspension window to regularise their vehicle documentation and ensure full compliance with motor vehicle regulations, especially those related to tinted or shaded glass.

IGP Egbetokun reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to enforcing all laws with fairness, transparency, and respect for citizens’ rights, while maintaining close collaboration with stakeholders in the justice sector.
