Soludo declares Tuesday school-free to honour teachers in Anambra

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo
Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has declared Tuesday, October 7, a school-free day to celebrate and honour teachers across the state.

The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, announced this in a statement on Monday in Awka, noting that the 2025 World Teachers’ Day fell on a Sunday.

“In recognition of the contributions of teachers and since this year’s World Teachers’ Day fell on a Sunday, the Governor has approved Tuesday as a school-free day to celebrate and honour teachers,” the statement said.

Chuma-Udeh added that the Solution Parents League, in collaboration with the Association of Private School Owners, will hold a mega endorsement march to show appreciation for Soludo’s reforms in the education sector.

“All teachers, parents, and school owners are expected to gather at Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, by 8:00 a.m. to honour the governor,” she said.

Meanwhile, across the country, teachers used this year’s Teachers’ Day to renew calls for improved welfare, better working conditions, and full implementation of the 65-year retirement age policy.

Unions and education stakeholders criticised the slow pace of policy implementation, poor remuneration, and lack of teaching facilities, urging federal and state governments to prioritise the education sector.
