The Zamfara State chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has commenced a six-day warning strike across all state-owned general hospitals.
According to the union’s chairman, Comrade Sani Shehu, the action is aimed at drawing the state government’s attention to longstanding grievances regarding the implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS).
Shehu explained that while the government approved a new salary structure for doctors under the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) in June, it failed to address the CONHESS structure, which covers nurses and other health professionals.
He stated that the union has made multiple attempts to engage the government since June, including follow-up meetings through August, but no meaningful resolution has been reached.
This latest action follows an earlier seven-day warning strike that began on September 11 but was suspended after just 24 hours due to initial government intervention. With the issues unresolved, the union has now resumed the strike to complete the remaining six days, from Saturday through Tuesday.
Shehu warned that if the government fails to meet their demands after the warning strike, the union will have no choice but to embark on an indefinite industrial action.
