Maryamu Idris, Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, has been appointed as Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) announced the appointment in an official statement on Thursday, congratulating Idris and highlighting the strategic importance of her new role.
“We congratulate Maryamu Idris, Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, on her appointment as the National Representative for Nigeria at the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC),” the company said.
With this appointment, Idris now holds dual roles—continuing to lead NNPC Trading Limited while also serving as Nigeria’s key technical liaison at OPEC. This positions her at a critical intersection of domestic oil governance and international energy policy.
As a member of OPEC’s Economic Commission Board (ECB), she will contribute to technical deliberations and provide policy recommendations on key energy issues. She will also coordinate closely with Nigeria’s OPEC Governor and other national stakeholders, including NNPC Ltd., the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources. Her mandate is to ensure that Nigeria’s energy interests are well represented and aligned with OPEC’s broader objectives.
Maryamu Idris brings over two decades of experience in the oil and gas industry, with expertise spanning market research, crude oil marketing, pricing strategy, and regulatory transparency.
She holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Economics from the University of Abuja, Nigeria, and a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Energy Economics from the University of Dundee, Scotland.
Her career began in 1999 at the Bureau of Public Enterprises as an Enterprise Officer. She later joined the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) from 2006 to 2009, where she served as a Petroleum Economist and Trust Fund Adviser, contributing to transparency reforms in Nigeria’s oil sector.
Idris joined NNPC’s Crude Oil Marketing Division and rose steadily through the ranks. From 2014 to 2017, she served as Supervisor of Market Research; from 2018 to 2020, she was Deputy Manager of Pricing and Performance; and from 2021 to 2022, she held the role of Manager, Pricing and Valuation.
At NNPC Trading Limited, she served as Executive Director of Crude and Condensate (2022–2024) and Executive Director of Planning and Commercial (2024–2025), before being appointed Managing Director in April 2025.
Her appointment to OPEC is widely seen as a recognition of her deep sectoral knowledge, policy expertise, and leadership within Nigeria’s energy ecosystem.
