A petrol tanker accident at Pasa Village along the Ilorin–Jebba Expressway has claimed the lives of two individuals, the Kwara State Fire Service confirmed on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:43 p.m. on Tuesday, 16 September 2025. According to a statement issued by Hassan Adekunle, Head of Media and Publicity for the Fire Service, the tanker, with registration number NSR 966 ZQ, was carrying 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) when it lost control, veered off the road, and overturned, triggering a massive fire.
Emergency response teams arrived at the scene promptly and successfully extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to other vehicles and nearby areas.
“Tragically, the driver and his assistant (motor boy) were confirmed dead at the scene,” the statement read.
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Falade Olumuyiwa, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and called for increased caution among road users, especially tanker drivers.
He advised that drivers should prioritise regular vehicle maintenance, strictly adhere to speed limits, avoid night driving where possible, and ensure they get adequate rest to prevent fatigue-related incidents.
Olumuyiwa also urged all motorists to keep functional fire extinguishers in their vehicles and to promptly report emergencies for swift response and intervention.
