Iran executes man over attack on security forces at 2022 protests

Iranian authorities executed a man on Saturday following his conviction for a deadly attack on security personnel during the widespread protests that erupted across the country in 2022, the judiciary announced.

Mehran Bahramian was found to be part of a group that opened fire on a vehicle carrying security forces in the city of Semirom, located in the central province of Isfahan. The attack resulted in the death of officer Mohsen Rezaei and injuries to others, according to the judiciary’s Mizan Online news outlet.

The incident took place on December 31, 2022, amid a wave of nationwide protests sparked by the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian Kurd who was detained for allegedly violating Iran’s strict dress code for women.

Bahramian was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court of Isfahan. His sentence was later upheld by the Supreme Court, and the execution was carried out in the early hours, Mizan reported.

The court charged Bahramian with “moharebeh” — a capital offense meaning “waging war against God” — for opening fire on the security vehicle and for inciting attacks against government buildings and personnel. The report described him as a “thug.”

The 2022 protests left hundreds dead, including security forces, and thousands more arrested. Since then, Iran has tried and executed several detainees connected to the unrest.

In June, Abbas Kurkuri was hanged after being convicted of killing seven people during the protests.

According to human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, Iran executes more people than any country except China.
