The Rivers State Police Command has cautioned against the growing practice of women collecting transport money from men and failing to honour planned meetings, warning that the act constitutes fraud.
In a video posted on X on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, said such behaviour falls under “obtaining by false pretence” and is punishable under Nigerian law.
“Why will you collect money from a man without going to see him? It is an offence, a punishable offence. It is obtaining money under false pretence, popularly known as 419,” Iringe-Koko stated.
She noted that offenders could face arrest and prosecution if victims report the matter to the police.
The police spokesperson further advised the public to steer clear of deceitful financial dealings and warned that the Command would take complaints of such conduct seriously.
