FG declares Friday public holiday for Eid-ul-Mawlid

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo
The Federal Government has declared Friday, September 5, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid-ul-Mawlid, the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad. The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

In a statement, the government congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and abroad, urging them to embrace the Prophet’s virtues of peace, love, and compassion. The Minister also called on all Nigerians, regardless of their faith, to use the holiday as a time for prayer, national unity, and to support government efforts to foster stability and development.

The statement emphasized that the celebration “offers us yet another opportunity to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, promote peaceful coexistence, and imbibe the Prophet’s teachings of mutual respect and selfless service to humanity.”

The holiday, which is celebrated in the third month of the Islamic calendar, is a long-standing tradition in Nigeria. Religious leaders and government officials often use the occasion to promote peace and unity, particularly as the country faces ongoing security and economic challenges. The government encouraged citizens to remain law-abiding and security conscious throughout the celebrations.
