Court clears Cardi B of assault in California case

A Los Angeles jury has cleared rapper Cardi B of assault in a $24 million civil lawsuit. The verdict comes after a week of colorful hearings where the “WAP” artist, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar, was accused of slashing a woman’s face with her fingernails.

The plaintiff, Emani Ellis, claimed that the 2018 incident occurred while Cardi B, who was four months pregnant at the time, was on her way to a medical appointment in Beverly Hills. Ellis alleged that the singer shouted racial slurs, spat at her, and scratched her face.

Cardi B’s legal team maintained that Ellis aggressively approached the star, attempting to film her while she tried to enter the doctor’s office privately. Her attorneys stated that the encounter quickly escalated into a profanity-laced shouting match before medical staff intervened. After the jury’s decision to dismiss the claims for compensation, Cardi B asserted that she never physically touched the woman.

“I swear to God, I will say it on my death bed, I did not touch that woman,” she told reporters. “The next person that tries to do a frivolous lawsuit against me, I’m going to counter-sue and I’m going to make you pay.”
