Polytechnic workers threaten strike, issue 21-day ultimatum to FG

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics has issued a fresh 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding urgent action on longstanding issues affecting its members or risk a nationwide industrial action.

The ultimatum, which began on August 27, 2025, was contained in a communiqué released at the end of the association’s 77th General Executive Council (GEC) meeting, held at the Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Danbatta, Kano State.

In the communiqué, SSANIP listed several unmet demands, including the immediate release of the new Scheme of Service, constitution of the Renegotiation Committee for the 2010 Agreement, payment of all outstanding arrears such as promotion arrears and salary reviews, release of the 2023, 2024, and 2025 Needs Assessment Funds, and full implementation of the new minimum wage and wage awards.

The communiqué, jointly signed by SSANIP National President, Comrade Philip Ogunsipe, and National Secretary, Comrade Shehu Gaya, expressed deep dissatisfaction with what it described as the government’s continued insincerity and failure to honour prior agreements.

“The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) held its 77th General Executive Council meeting from Tuesday, August 26 to Thursday, August 28, 2025, at the Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Danbatta, Kano State, where issues affecting the union and the welfare of its members were extensively discussed,” the statement read.

The Council accused the government of “paying lip service” to the resolution of key demands, despite repeated engagements and efforts by the union to pursue peaceful dialogue.

“After exhausting its patience on these issues, the Council observed with great displeasure the insincerity of the government in honouring previous agreements or prioritising the education sector,” it added.

As a result, the union has demanded that the Federal Government take immediate action to resolve the listed issues within 21 days, starting from August 27, 2025.

“Failure to do so will leave the union with no option but to withdraw its services across the nation,” the communiqué warned.
