The Ebonyi State Government has announced an increase in the minimum wage for all civil and public servants to ₦90,000, up ₦20,000 from the previous ₦70,000. The new wage takes immediate effect.
The decision was reached during the Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at the New Government House in Abakaliki, the state capital.
The announcement was made in a press statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Ikeuwa Collins-Omebeh, and made available to The Telegraph on Thursday.
According to the statement, the wage increase aligns with Governor Francis Nwifuru’s ‘People’s Charter of Needs Agenda’ and underscores his commitment to prioritizing the welfare of Ebonyi’s workers.
In addition to the wage hike, Omebeh disclosed that the government approved the establishment of the Ebonyi State Virology Research and Innovation Centre. This facility aims to enhance the state’s capacity for research, diagnosis, and surveillance of viral diseases, as well as training to meet public health needs and keep pace with global scientific advancements.
Meanwhile, on the same day, the Imo State Government also approved a rise in its minimum wage, increasing it from ₦70,000 to ₦104,000. Governor Hope Uzodimma made the announcement during a meeting with labour leaders at the Government House in Owerri, the state capital.
In July 2024, President Bola Tinubu signed the revised minimum wage bill into law, raising the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000, following extensive negotiations between government officials, labour unions, and the private sector. Since then, several states have opted to increase the minimum wage beyond the ₦70,000 threshold for their civil servants.
