Two feared dead as violence breaks out at Balogun market

Tension gripped Lagos Island on Wednesday following a violent clash at the popular Balogun Market, which reportedly left at least two people dead.

Graphic videos shared on social media captured scenes of chaos. In one clip reviewed by The Telegraph, a man appeared to lie motionless after being attacked with a machete. Another video showed a suspected assailant, stripped naked and reportedly lynched by a mob.

The exact cause of the violence remains unclear. While some eyewitnesses claimed the clash was cult-related, others alleged it was triggered by an inter-ethnic dispute between Yoruba and Igbo traders.

As panic spread, traders shut their shops abruptly, and pedestrians fled the area in search of safety. At the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
