A passenger train traveling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed on Tuesday morning, sparking panic among passengers and concern among their families.

The incident reportedly occurred around 11:09 a.m. along the Kaduna corridor, shortly after the train departed the nation’s capital. The derailment happened at kilometer 49, between Kubwa and Asham stations.

One passenger described the aftermath as chaotic, with people scrambling in fear and confusion as the train came to a sudden halt. Details on the cause of the derailment remain unclear, and no official confirmation of injuries or casualties has been released as of the time of reporting.

Security sources said military personnel were swiftly deployed to the scene to assist with evacuating stranded passengers and securing the area.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has since confirmed the derailment in a statement signed by its Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa. He noted that emergency rescue teams, medical personnel, and nearby hospitals had been alerted and mobilised.

“A full complement of security is already on the ground, and efforts are ongoing to safely return all passengers to Abuja,” Opeifa said.

The NRC has yet to provide details on the extent of the damage or when services on the route will resume. The Abuja-Kaduna rail line has remained a critical but occasionally troubled transport corridor in recent years.
