President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed a historic Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) with Brazil, paving the way for direct air connectivity between Nigeria and South America’s largest economy.

The agreement was formalised on Monday during President Tinubu’s official state visit to Brasília. According to a statement issued by Tunde Moshood, media aide to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, the signing ceremony was witnessed by both President Tinubu and his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, signed on behalf of Nigeria, while Brazil’s Minister of Transport, Silvio Costa Filho, represented his country.

The BASA establishes a formal framework for direct flights between the two nations, with significant potential to boost trade, tourism, investment, and diplomatic ties.

“The agreement marks a key step in Nigeria’s broader efforts to strengthen international partnerships and enhance global connectivity,” the statement read.

President Tinubu arrived in Brazil accompanied by a high-level delegation, including the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu; and Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari.

Welcoming the agreement, President Lula expressed his administration’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Nigeria across strategic sectors such as aviation, agriculture, and infrastructure. He described the BASA as a reflection of the strong bilateral relationship and a platform to enhance economic and cultural exchange.

During the two-day visit, President Tinubu is also expected to meet with key Brazilian officials, including the President of the Senate, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, and the President of the Supreme Federal Court.

The visit will feature high-level discussions between Nigerian and Brazilian delegations, aimed at exploring new avenues for collaboration and fostering mutual growth and development.
