Benue Assembly elects new speaker as Dajoh resigns

Alfred Emberga
Alfred Emberga, a member of the Benue State House of Assembly, has been elected as the new Speaker of the House.

Mr Emberga was one of four lawmakers suspended on Friday over allegations of plotting to remove the former Speaker, Hyacinth Dajoh. However, during a special session held on Sunday and presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Lami Danladi-Ogenyi, the House lifted the suspension on all four members.

The leadership change follows the resignation of Mr Dajoh, who officially stepped down as Speaker on Sunday. His resignation letter, dated August 24, was posted on his personal Facebook page.

In the letter, Mr Dajoh stated that his decision was made in good faith and in the best interest of Benue State. He expressed gratitude to his colleagues for the opportunity to serve as Speaker of the 10th Assembly, describing it as an honour to be “first among equals.”

Mr Dajoh also reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving diligently as the representative of Gboko West State Constituency.
