The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, to align with his former running mate, Mr. Peter Obi, who remains committed to the emerging opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Responding to Baba-Ahmed’s recent criticism of the coalition, the ADC described his remarks as personal opinions that do not reflect the stance of the party or its coalition partners.
In a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Jackie Wayas, the ADC reaffirmed its dedication to uniting credible opposition forces to provide a strong alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Baba-Ahmed, in a televised interview on Friday, accused the coalition of “deceiving Nigerians” and expressed doubt about its capacity to address the country’s deep-rooted challenges. He also hinted at plans to run alongside Obi again in 2027.
However, the ADC responded swiftly, emphasizing that the coalition remains a serious and inclusive platform aimed at delivering accountable, people-centered leadership and restoring confidence in governance.
“The opposition coalition is a collective initiative, committed to offering Nigerians a credible alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s administration,” the statement read.
Highlighting the calibre of leaders involved, the ADC noted that the coalition includes prominent political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Senator David Mark, former Governors Rauf Aregbesola and Rotimi Amaechi, and Mr. Peter Obi.
According to the ADC, these leaders came together after extensive consultations, setting aside party lines in pursuit of a unified national vision grounded in competence, compassion, and integrity.
The party also recalled that Mr. Obi had publicly endorsed the ADC as a viable platform for the 2027 elections, reaffirming his commitment to a coalition that places the welfare of Nigerians above political ambition.
“Peter Obi has consistently advocated for unity and cooperation among progressive forces, stressing that no single group can transform Nigeria alone,” the statement added. “He believes in dismantling the entrenched systems of poverty and insecurity through collective action.”
The ADC reiterated that Baba-Ahmed’s remarks were his personal views and not representative of the coalition’s position.
“Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed’s assertions are his personal opinions and do not reflect the stance of the ADC or its partners in the coalition,” Wayas clarified.
Nonetheless, the party extended a hand of fellowship to Baba-Ahmed, describing him as a principled leader whose experience and voice remain vital.
“Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed is a respected figure who has long championed integrity and justice. This coalition is a collective project that needs the strength of all patriots. We sincerely hope he will join the effort to reshape Nigeria’s future,” Wayas said.
Reaffirming its mission, the ADC called on Nigerians to support the coalition’s vision of a new, united, and prosperous nation.
“Nigerians deserve clarity, unity, and purposeful leadership. We invite all citizens to rally behind this movement as we work together to rescue Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
