Police arrest fake doctor after woman dies during abortion

Detectives from the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a suspected fake medical practitioner, Sunday Okon Akpan, for allegedly performing an illegal abortion that led to the death of a 35-year-old woman, Blessing Sunday Etim.

The suspect, who operates the Full Life Medical Centre in Ikot Obio Odongo, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, was apprehended after reportedly attempting to dispose of the victim’s body secretly.

Spokesperson for the command, DSP Timfon John, disclosed the incident to journalists on Thursday. She said the deceased was an employee of the suspect and had gone to work on the day of the incident.

“On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at about 9:30 a.m., a man identified as Sunday Okon Akpan was arrested for allegedly carrying out an unlawful abortion which resulted in the death of a woman, Blessing Sunday Etim,” John stated.

She explained that the victim’s mother had raised concerns after being unable to reach her daughter, prompting a police investigation. According to a co-tenant, the suspect tried to dump the victim’s body in her room but fled when confronted.

“Upon arrival at the scene, detectives discovered a premature fetus protruding from the victim’s body. Further investigation revealed that the suspect, a resident of Afaha Offiong in Nsit Ibom LGA, was not a licensed doctor or nurse, but a community health worker,” she said.

John added that preliminary findings showed the Full Life Medical Centre was being used to carry out illegal medical procedures and abortions. The facility was found deserted following the suspect’s arrest.

The victim’s body has been deposited at a morgue for autopsy. Police say investigations are ongoing, with further updates to be provided in due course.
