The late Nigerian football icon and coach, Christian Chukwu, affectionately known as “Chairman,” was laid to rest on Saturday in his hometown of Obe, Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State.
Chukwu, the former captain and coach of the Super Eagles, passed away on April 12 at the age of 74, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Speaking at the burial ceremony, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah noted that the event marked the culmination of nearly 10 days of tributes and commemorations held across Lagos and Enugu. These included a colloquium and various ceremonial activities celebrating the football legend’s life and legacy.
“For me, and I believe for many others, meeting Chairman was always inspiring due to his simplicity and humility,” Governor Mbah said. “He was disciplined, dignified, polite, and deeply empathetic.”
Consoling the family, the governor pledged government support in preserving Chukwu’s legacy. “We will ensure that his name is immortalised, for he served and loved both Enugu and Nigeria wholeheartedly. Let us find comfort in the remarkable memories and legacy he leaves behind.”
The Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ike, who delivered the homily, praised Chukwu’s immense contributions to football in Nigeria and Africa. He described him as a “strong man” who led his teams through numerous battles and victories, while remaining a devoted family man.
“Chukwu’s successes with Rangers, the Super Eagles, and others are a testament to his dedication. He was generous, extending his kindness even to the family of St Philip’s Church, Obe,” Bishop Ike said.
He further recalled that following Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations victory, Chukwu and his teammates were honoured with National Awards. In 2012, Chukwu received the prestigious African Football Legend Award in recognition of his outstanding achievements and impact on the sport across the continent.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu Jr. thanked all who came to pay their final respects.
Born in Enugu, Christian Chukwu is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest defenders. Revered for his leadership and defensive prowess, he captained Enugu Rangers and the Nigerian national team, leading the country to its first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980. He later managed both teams, earning widespread respect for his discipline, humility, and dedication to the game.
The funeral attracted numerous dignitaries, including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau—represented by Nigeria National League Chairman George Aluo—and Senator Victor Umeh of Anambra Central.
Other notable attendees included members of the Enugu Executive Council, retired Anglican Archbishop Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, former Rangers players, former Enugu Sports Club Chairman Chief Nnanna Atuonwu, and many others.
