The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will on Friday, August 15, 2025, arraign 23 suspected internet fraudsters before Justice Deinde Dipeolu of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos.
The suspects are part of the 93 individuals arrested at a hotel located within the precincts of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
According to a statement issued by EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, preliminary profiling revealed that nearly all the suspects have been indicted for alleged offences related to impersonation, identity theft, and internet fraud.
The arrests were made during a pool party, reportedly organized to celebrate fraudulent proceeds. The EFCC disclosed that intelligence gathered indicated the party was initially scheduled to hold at two separate locations but was eventually moved to the hotel near the OOPL in an attempt to evade detection by EFCC operatives.
“The planners became aware of the commission’s surveillance and shifted the venue to the OOPL hotel, presumably believing it would shield them from arrest,” the statement said.
Oyewale clarified that the EFCC’s operation was not directed at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library or its facilities, but specifically targeted the suspects involved in the cybercrime activities.
“The former president’s facility was not a target of EFCC’s operations. The suspects were the targets and have confessed to their involvement in internet crimes,” he added.
The commission noted that additional arraignments for the remaining suspects will follow in due course.
