Veteran Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, has issued a public apology following an altercation with airline staff at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Tuesday.
In a video released to The Telegraph on Friday, the music icon described his actions as “regrettable” and took full responsibility for the incident.
“I take full responsibility for all that transpired. I sincerely apologise to Mr. President, the Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria—my father and father of the nation—the Honourable Minister of Aviation, the pilot, airline staff, passengers, my fans worldwide, and my family,” he said.
K1 explained that the incident arose from a container he was carrying, which reportedly contained water prescribed by his doctor due to dehydration concerns.
“I had water in a flask because of my health condition. I need to sip water regularly, as recommended by my doctor,” he clarified.
While reaffirming his loyalty to Nigeria, the singer added: “My love for this country is unshakable. I have always represented Nigeria proudly on global stages and will continue to do so. I deeply regret this incident and humbly seek forgiveness from all affected.”
Sanctions and investigation
In response to the incident, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo on Thursday directed the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to place the musician on a no-fly list, pending a full investigation.
Keyamo described the confrontation as “a temporary loss of sanity and control on both sides,” noting that the situation could have led to serious safety consequences.
“Whether it was alcohol or water is no longer the issue. The major concern is that he physically blocked the aircraft from taxiing, which borders on endangering lives—akin to a hostage situation,” the minister said via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Keyamo also warned that any airline ignoring the directive could face operating license withdrawal.
FAAN, NCAA reactions
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) accused K1 De Ultimate of unruly behaviour and attempting to board a ValueJet flight with an unidentified liquid—later identified as alcohol—despite repeated warnings from security and the flight captain.
According to FAAN spokesperson Obiageli Orah, the substance was eventually spilled on an airline security officer, leading to further disruption.
A viral video showed the singer standing in front of the aircraft, obstructing its movement, before he was escorted away by security personnel.
In response, the NCAA suspended two ValueJet pilots involved in the incident for a “serious breach of safety protocols.”
The agency has also petitioned the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, calling for the prosecution of the musician.
