Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has endorsed former President Goodluck Jonathan as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) strongest potential candidate for the 2027 presidential election, urging the party to make deliberate efforts to bring him back into the fold.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Lamido said “I think for the PDP, they should try to woo him [Jonathan]. He is their best bet. To me, he remains the most viable option. Any credible candidate presented by the PDP will enjoy support from Nigerians.”
Lamido highlighted Jonathan’s experience and temperament as key advantages, noting that the former president had previously led the country, understands the complexities of governance, and works well with a wide range of stakeholders.
According to the PDP stalwart, no southern PDP member currently matches Jonathan’s credentials.
“He is welcome, competent, and very qualified. With all due respect to other members, I don’t see a better alternative in the South than Jonathan, if he decides to return to the PDP,” Lamido said.
“He’s been in office, he listens, he values collaboration, and he’s a mature and composed leader. If the presidency is zoned to the South, who else in the PDP can match him?”
Lamido’s remarks come amid growing speculation about Jonathan’s possible return to the PDP and a potential bid for the 2027 presidency.
Though the former president has largely remained politically low-key since leaving office in 2015, reports of behind-the-scenes lobbying and quiet negotiations within PDP circles have continued to fuel rumours of a comeback.
Jonathan has yet to make any public declaration regarding his political future, but he remains a closely watched figure in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of 2027.
