Power rotation debate diversionary, problem-solving priority — Falana

Femi Falana, SAN
Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and human rights lawyer Femi Falana has condemned the ongoing debate over power rotation in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections, describing it as a distraction from the country’s urgent challenges.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Falana criticized discussions focused on regional power shifts, term limits, or extended tenures as diversionary tactics that take attention away from Nigeria’s more pressing issues such as insecurity, hunger, and deteriorating infrastructure.

“I refuse to join the campaign for power shift or for power to remain in one region for four or eight years. These debates are distractions,” Falana said.

He emphasized that Nigeria’s priority should be a united effort to tackle its deep-rooted structural problems rather than getting bogged down in the politics of rotation.

Falana urged political leaders to concentrate on policies that improve the everyday lives of Nigerians, warning against elite power struggles that fail to address the real struggles faced by the population.
