Award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has praised Labour Party’s Peter Obi, describing him as a leader not driven by ego or a desperate thirst for power.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Amazing Africans programme on Monday, Adichie said Obi has remained consistent and humble, despite intense criticism and the outcome of the 2023 elections.

“He doesn’t need to be president. He wants to be because he genuinely cares about Nigeria — and that’s an important distinction,” she said.

“There are people who are desperate to become president, not out of any noble intent, but because of their personal egos.”

Adichie noted that Obi’s values continue to resonate deeply with many Nigerians, adding that her support for him stems from her love for the country.

Reflecting on their long-standing relationship, she shared, “He is one of the simplest, most authentic people I’ve ever known. The Peter Obi I met 15 years ago is still the same today — consistent and principled.”

She commended Obi’s humility and commitment to accountability, saying he doesn’t view public service as a favour to the people.

“Peter Obi doesn’t expect praise for doing his job as a leader — because to him, leadership is a responsibility, not a privilege. That’s one of the reasons I support him,” she said.

“There’s a sense of accountability in him. He doesn’t see himself as someone who should lord it over the people. He sees himself as one of them.”
