Man rescued after 10 hours in rubble of collapsed Abuja building

A 27-year-old man was rescued early Sunday morning after being trapped for nearly 10 hours under the rubble of a collapsed three-storey building in the Lifecamp area of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed.

The building, located in the fast-developing Lifecamp district, reportedly collapsed around 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, August 2. Upon receiving a distress call, the Divisional Police Officer of Lifecamp mobilised a rescue operation in collaboration with emergency response agencies and construction firms.

In a statement on Sunday, FCT police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh said the scene was immediately secured, and a coordinated rescue effort was launched involving the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the FCT Administration’s Development Control Department, and construction companies Julius Berger and Zeberced.

“At about 4:00 a.m. on 3rd August 2025, rescue teams successfully extricated Aliyu Salisu, a 27-year-old male citizen of the Niger Republic—the only known victim—who had remained trapped in the rubble for nearly 10 hours,” Adeh said.

Salisu was rushed to Cedar Crest Hospital in Gudu for medical evaluation and is currently responding well to treatment.

Commissioner of Police Ajao Adewale, who was at the scene to oversee operations, commended the swift and coordinated efforts of all stakeholders involved in the rescue.

“I commend the timely and professional response of NEMA, FCTA Development Control officials, our service commanders, and members of the community who supported the effort,” he said.

The police urged residents to stay vigilant and promptly report emergencies or suspicious activities. The Command’s emergency lines—0803 200 3913 and 0806 158 1938—remain open for such reports.

As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the building collapse had not been confirmed, and no other casualties were reported.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing.
