Tinubu appoints governing council for Ogoni varsity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of the Governing Council and principal officers for the newly established Federal University of Environment and Technology, located in Koroma/Saakpenwa, Ogoni, Rivers State.

The appointments were announced on Wednesday in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Professor Don Mon Baridam, a seasoned management expert and former lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, was named Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council. Also appointed from the University of Port Harcourt is Professor Chinedu Mmom, a professor of geography and former Rivers State Commissioner for Education, who will serve as the University’s pioneer Vice-Chancellor.

Both Baridam and Mmom hail from the South-South geopolitical zone.

Other members of the governing council include Mr. Emmanuel Onoja (North Central), Mr. Hamid Adekunle (South-West), Professor Chima Oji (South-East), and Alhaji Abdullahi Magaji Lamda (North-West).

According to the statement, President Tinubu also appointed the following principal officers: Dr. Mpigi Monday Douglas (South-South) as Registrar, Zoryii Josco Nwaimanie (North Central) as Bursar, and Dr. Saghanen Ntogo G. B. (South-South) as University Librarian.

The Federal University of Environment and Technology is scheduled to admit its first set of students in September 2025. The institution was formally established by law following President Tinubu’s assent to the enabling bill on February 3, 2025.
