President Bola Tinubu has extended a stirring message of support to Nigeria’s Super Falcons ahead of their highly anticipated showdown with host nation Morocco in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), taking place tonight at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
In a personally signed statement issued on Saturday, President Tinubu praised the team’s remarkable journey through the tournament, emphasizing the pride and unwavering backing of the entire nation.
Commending their “awe-inspiring” performance, the President lauded the Super Falcons for their grit, honour, and exemplary sportsmanship, both on and off the pitch. He singled out their heartfelt visit to Gabriela Salgado, the injured player from South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, describing the gesture as a reflection of Africa’s shared values of empathy, compassion, and sisterhood.
“Your sportsmanship and humanity shine just as brightly as your skills,” Tinubu noted.
Highlighting the team’s formidable run in the competition, the President remarked: “If statistics alone won matches, you would already be champions.” He pointed to their unbeaten group-stage performance, solid victories in the knockout rounds, and the fact that they’ve conceded just one goal en route to the final.
President Tinubu also reminded the squad of their flawless WAFCON finals record, having won all nine previous title matches — a legacy now within reach of a historic tenth triumph.
To underscore the full support of the Nigerian government and its people, the President announced the dispatch of a high-level delegation to Rabat to rally behind the team. The delegation includes the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite; the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; and the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, along with other senior officials.
President Tinubu also expressed gratitude to the players’ families, coaching staff, Nigerian supporters in Morocco, the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, and the Nigerian Mission in Morocco for their enduring encouragement throughout the tournament.
In a powerful closing message, he urged the Super Falcons to seize the moment:
“You will finish strong, by the Grace of God. Go for the tenth! Bring the trophy home. Your fellow countrymen and women — young and old — are behind you every step of the way.”
The President concluded by expressing his eagerness to welcome the team, officials, and the much-coveted trophy back to Abuja.
As the nation holds its breath, the Super Falcons carry with them the hopes of millions, poised to etch their names into the annals of African football history once more.
